Last season, Pueblo West and its roster of unproven youngsters thrived under first-year coach Clint Buderus, finishing 8-3 and winning the 4A Pikes Peak League championship.
With a bulk of its team returning in 2019 and big things expected for the squad, Pueblo West will enter the 2019 season as the top team in the preseason Pueblo Preps Power Five, ranking the top high school football teams in Pueblo County.
In 2019, Pueblo West returns its quarterback in Chandler Mason, receivers Dawson Menegatti and Reece Bundy, and an experienced offensive line to serve as the anchor. All three were all-Pikes Peak League sections in 2018.
A very slim second to Pueblo West is East, a 2018 3A state runner-up. With a new but highly-touted new quarterback in tow in senior signal-caller Jack Helzer, who has been waiting in the wings to lead the Eagles’ offense. The effectiveness of Helzer’s connection to receiver Marvin London, Jr. will be a centerpiece of East’s season.
Pueblo West got the nod over East because of its win over the Eagles in the 2018 regular season, pointing to the teams’ Sept. 20 showdown as a chance for the Cyclones and Eagles to claim local bragging rights.
South returns most of its offensive firepower this season after fielding a young team in 2018 that rebounded from an 0-4 start before putting together a playoff season. Behind a perhaps Pueblo’s top quarterback in senior Logan Petit, look for a strong season from the Colts.
Rounding out the top five are the Bell Game combatants with Central at No. 4, and Centennial at No. 5.
Note on rankings: Power rankings rank local teams across all classifications. As such, 4A teams are generally considered stronger than 3A teams, 3A stronger than 2A, etc.
