It was a definite shock to the system last week in the Pueblo football world, two blowouts, with Pueblo teams at the opposite side, defining the week.
A highly-touted rematch of the 3A state championship game between East and Palmer Ridge ended with a thud as the Bears, the No. 1-ranked team in the state, blanked East 41-0.
Pueblo West, meanwhile, routed an overmatched Mesa Ridge squad 40-0 to preserve both its top spot in the Pueblo Preps Power Five as well as the No. 4 spot in the CHSAANow.com 4A state rankings.
The two teams will meet this week in an another highly-touted matchup at Dutch Clark Stadium, and facing a tough opponent, the Eagles are hoping to avoid a repeat of last week’s Palmer Ridge loss.
South continues rolling, knocking off yet another ranked opponent with a 32-22 road win over then-No. 5 ranked Discovery Canyon Saturday.
And if the Colts want to take in a great game at the Dutch between East and Pueblo West, they can, as they are on a bye this week.
Central moved to 2-0 with a 50-15 rout of Mitchell while County snagged its first win of the season with a 28-14 win over Canon City, showing off its vaunted rushing game. This week, Central draws Sierra in a Thursday night tilt at Dutch Clark Stadium while County gets Rifle in a road game to the Western slope.
Honorable mention goes to Rye, claiming its third consecutive shutout win with a 35-0 victory over John Mall. Can Rye make it four in a row? Rocky Ford is 0-2 so far, so you never know…
Note on rankings: Power rankings rank local teams across all classifications. As such, 4A teams are generally considered stronger than 3A teams, 3A stronger than 2A, etc.
