After a dominant Pigskin Classic win in which it defeated rival Pueblo County 29-3, Pueblo West retains its spot atop the latest Pueblo Preps Power Five rankings.
However, County largely hung with the Cyclones for the duration of the game, playing largely mistake-free football against one of the top 4A teams in the state, and the Hornets leapfrog Centennial to make to No. 5 in the rankings. Last week, the Bulldogs lost to Sand Creek 42-27, a team that did not win a game in 2018.
South remained in the No. 2 spot, knocking off another 3A power in Erie, then the 4th-ranked team in the state, by a score of 28-10. Again, the Colts’ offense went off, led by tailback George Longoria. He followed up a week-one 180-yard, two touchdown performance with a 170-yard, two score game against Erie.
East got back to its winning ways, outlasting Longmont, a team on the cusp of a ranking in 4A, 26-22, to retain the No. 3 spot. The Eagles needed a last-second tackle to keep the Trojans out of the end zone in order to preserve the win. The victory sets up a doozy, as the Eagles tangle with Palmer Ridge Friday in a rematch of last season’s 3A state championship.
Central retained the No. 4 spot with an impressive 34-7 beating of Falcon in its season-opener at Dutch Clark Stadium.
Note on rankings: Power rankings rank local teams across all classifications. As such, 4A teams are generally considered stronger than 3A teams, 3A stronger than 2A, etc.
