On Friday night, there were two big measuring-stick games for two Pueblo teams hoping to make a bid for a state title.
As undefeated South took on 3A No. 1 Palmer Ridge while Pueblo West squared-off with 4A No. 1 Pine Creek, both felt short in potential upset bids, the Colts falling 24-19 to Palmer Ridge at the Neta & Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl while the Cyclones were thumped 41-13 by Pine Creek at Cyclones Stadium.
The losses for Pueblo West, the reigning No. 1 in the Pueblo Preps Power Five, and South, the county’s 2nd-ranked team, marked the first losses of the 2019 season for both squads.
In Pueblo West, Pine Creek ran all over the Cyclones behind the top-ranked running back in Colorado, David Moore III, as he ran for 202 yards and four touchdowns, part of a bitter loss for Pueblo West.
South, facing Palmer Ridge for the third time in less than two seasons, again were unable to solve the Bears, seeing a 13-3 lead disappear as Palmer Ridge scored 21 straight to eventually ride to a win.
With the 34-20 loss by No. 4 East to Discovery Canyon Thursday night, dropping the Eagles to 1-4 on the season, the only wins in the county came from No. 5 Pueblo County, which rolled Mitchell 48-14, and from Centennial, which claimed its first win in convincing fashion, blanking Kent Denver 21-0 at Dutch Clark Stadium Friday night.
No. 3 Central entertains Harrison Saturday.
