It’s not every day that a team beats the No. 1 ranked team in the state, and it certainly isn’t every day that the No. 1 team in question is Lewis-Palmer, the defending state champions and arguably the biggest prep sports dynasty in the state.
Pueblo West, though, did just that Saturday, defeating the Rangers at the Lewis-Palmer Tournament to hand the Rangers its first loss to a 4A team since 2015.
Despite that, the Cyclones couldn’t catch Pueblo County, the reigning No. 1 in the Pueblo Preps Power Five rankings, as the Hornets preserve its top spot.
The Hornets only had one game last week, sweeping 5A Doherty in three sets last Thursday. But Pueblo West is certainly nipping on its heels after beating Lewis-Palmer and rising to No. 7 in the state rankings.
The Cyclones went 3-1 at the Lewis-Palmer Tournament, also gathering wins over Platte Canyon and Montrose before falling to 5A Ralston Valley in the championship. Aside from that loss, Pueblo West’s only loss on the season is to Palmer Ridge, currently the No. 3 team in the state.
The Hornets’ body of work, though, is simply more impressive thus far. County defeated Discovery Canyon two weeks ago, a team that is currently ranked No. 2 in the state.
But this week, County will take on traditional 4A No. 9 Cheyenne Mountain while Pueblo West will now draw Discovery Canyon in a road showdown Thursday night.
Pueblo West and County may hop one another in the rankings, but it’s all just building up to an Oct. 8 league battle between the two at Pueblo West High School, the first of two matches this season.
The rest of the rankings stay intact, with Rye, now the 7th-ranked 2A team in the state, making its case to move higher in the Power Five in the coming weeks.
Note on rankings: Power rankings rank local teams across all classifications. As such, 4A teams are generally considered stronger than 3A teams, 3A stronger than 2A, etc.
