Seemingly, the pressure of being the No. 1 team in the state got to Centennial last week, responding to being selected the top 4A team in Colorado by CHSAANow.com with a pair of losses last week.
Regardless, even though the Bulldogs fell out of the CHSAANow.com 4A rankings, the losses weren’t enough to knock the Bulldogs from the top spot in the Pueblo Preps Power Rankings.
It was a major upset to say the least when the Bulldogs faced 2018 3A state quarterfinalist Salida and fell 2-1 last Tuesday. After defeating St. Mary’s, another 3A school by a 6-0 score last Thursday, the Bulldogs fell 2-1 again to a then-winless Cheyenne Mountain squad that is historically one of the top teams in Colorado.
Regardless, though, there’s not much denying that the Bulldogs are still the top team in Pueblo. It schlacked South 6-0 two weeks ago and busted Pueblo West 1-0 in the season opener Aug. 23.
It’s only the Cyclones that come close to Centennial, having battled the Bulldogs hard in that season opener and following it up a pair of wins over Widefield and Mesa Ridge. It follows it up with four extremely winnable games, the most daunting of which being Tuesday’s Discovery Canyon showdown, before opening league play against South Sept. 24.
The rest of the rankings remain unchanged, with County (No. 3), East (No. 4) and South (No. 5) stay put and are practically interchangeable in those positions. They will undoubtedly shuffle this week as schedules for all three get harder, and East and County show down in a non-league battle Saturday.
Note on rankings: Power rankings rank local teams across all classifications. As such, 4A teams are generally considered stronger than 3A teams, 3A stronger than 2A, etc.
