For the 20th time, Pueblo West, ranked first in this week’s Pueblo Preps Power Five and 5th in the CHSAANow.com 4A football rankings, and its District 70 foe Pueblo County, tangled in the Pigskin Classic rivalry game. The Cyclones emerged victorious for the third straight season and 11th time in 12 seasons with a 29-3 win over the Hornets.

The Cyclones spread it around with a balanced offensive attack, quarterback Chandler Mason tossing touchdowns to Dawson Menegatti and Alex Reid, while rushing for a touchdown of his own. Matt Rudd added the other score for Pueblo West.

It was also an emotional night, as former Pueblo West teacher Taneisha Schumann was honored at pregame, her fight against cancer serving as an inspiration to the Cyclone team.

County, under new coach Monte Pinkerton, showed off a solid rushing game led by Doherty transfer Jose Handford.

The Cyclones improve to 2-0, and will undoubtedly retain its spot atop the Pueblo Preps Power Five, while County begins at 0-1 heading into its home opener vs. Canon City next week.

South 28, Erie 10

ERIE – An 80-yard touchdown run by George Longoria on the second offensive snap of the game keyed a 28-10 win by South over Erie. The win moves the Colts, No. 2 in the Pueblo Preps Power Five, to 2-0 on the early season.

Longoria recorded two touchdowns overall as the Colts never trailed, heading an offensive effort that featured scored from Jackson Dickerson and Logan Petit. Defensively, the Colts were set up by two big momentum-changing interceptions from Luke Guarienti and Jace Bellah, the latter of which tossed a TD pass to Dickerson in the first half.

The Colts will have their hands full next Saturday in a road trip to Discovery Canyon, where South will face the 2-0 Thunder, which are currently tied at 7th in the state with South in the CHSAANow.com 3A rankings.

Central 34, Falcon 7

The Wildcats won its 2019 opener Friday night behind three touchdowns from Jeromey Baros as Central cruised past Falcon 34-7 at Dutch Clark Stadium.

In a game that started late after a 1-hour lightning delay, the Wildcats seemed able to move the ball at will, opening with a 65-yard scoring drive capped by a Brandon Martin touchdown run, and ended the first half up 20-0.

The Wildcats, which entered Friday’s game as the 4th-ranked team in the Pueblo Preps Power Five, will travel to Mitchell next week.

Rye 20, Crowley County 0

Rye kept its season literally perfect Friday night with a 20-0 home shutout over Crowley County, the second consecutive shutout to start the 2019 season. Last week, the Thunderbolts beat Ellicott 30-0.

The Thunderbolt defense was a rock, forcing five turnovers in keeping its 2019 defensive report card perfect.

Rye will continue non-league play next Friday at John Mall.
