LONGMONT — Needing to flush away its season-opening upset loss to Roosevelt, East bounced back with a dramatic 26-22 road win over Longmont to even its 2019 record at 1-1.

The Eagles, ranked third in this week’s Pueblo Preps Power Five and 9th in the 3A football rankings, relied on a game-saving sack from senior Elijah Perez, halting a would-be Longmont scoring drive at the East 2-yard-line and preserving the Eagles’ win.

Trailing 22-20 with 4:52 left in the game, the Eagles put together a 54-yard scoring drive capped by a 3-yard touchdown run by Frank Kushner that would prove to be the game-winner.

The win over Longmont, a 4A team on the cusp of a top-ten ranking entering Thursday’s game, gives the Eagles a boost headed into a rematch of the 2018 3A state championship game when it hosts defending state champ Palmer Ridge next Friday night.

Sand Creek 42, Centennial 27

Despite a late surge, Centennial dropped its season-opener to visiting Sand Creek Thursday in a 42-27 setback at Dutch Clark Stadium.

It’s a tough pill to swallow for the Bulldogs, falling to the Scorpions, which brought a 16-game losing streak into Thursday’s game.

Tony Cardona led the Bulldogs with a passing touchdown, rushing touchdown and a two-point conversion score.

The Bulldogs will travel to D20 Stadium in Colorado Springs for its next tussle in a Thursday-nighter against Liberty.
