Cyclones continue atop Pueblo Preps Power Five football rankings

A rout over a top-ten 4A team was more than enough reason to keep Pueblo West atop the Pueblo Preps Power Five as this week’s top prep football team in Pueblo County.

The Cyclones, ranked 8th in the state in the 4A Rankings, scored on each of its first two offensive plays on its way to a 35-14 win over #10 Fruita Monument in Grand Junction Friday. Its lead built as high as 35-0 in the third quarter before Fruita could gain some traction, Pueblo West’s dominance serving as an early-season statement win heading into Friday’s Pigskin Classic.

South vaults its way to the No. 2 spot in the Pueblo Preps Power Five on the strength of its 49-25 win over Holy Family, the 10th-ranked 3A team in the state. South entered the game as the 8th-ranked 3A team in the state, and dating back to last season, have won five of its last six.

East, the 2018 3A state runner-up and the 2nd-ranked team in the state entering last week’s season opener, falls to the No. 3 spot in the Pueblo Preps Power Five after a 38-21 upset loss to Roosevelt, a team that was unranked in the 3A Preseason Poll.

Central (No. 4) and Centennial (No. 5) remain unmoved from last week’s rankings as both squads await their season openers this weekend. Thursday, Centennial draws Sand Creek, which was winless in 2018, while Central will host Falcon Friday night. The Falcons won four games in 2018.
