On the first Friday Night of the 2019 season, offensive explosions by Pueblo West, South and Rye resulted in season-opening wins, headlining Pueblo high school football Friday.

The Cyclones, ranked 8th in 4A by and 1st in the Pueblo Preps Power Five, scored on their first two offensive plays to defeat 10th-ranked Fruita Monument 35-14 in Grand Junction.

South, ranked 8th in 3A by and 3rd in the Pueblo Preps Power Five, relied on offensive fireworks from quarterback Logan Petit and receiver Jackson Dickerson to knock off 9th-ranked Holy Family 49-25.

Rye, which was a 3-6 team a year ago, started its season off with a resounding win, bouncing Ellicott on the road by a score of 30-0.

One Pueblo setback Friday was in a huge upset as East, ranked 2nd in 3A by and 2nd in the Pueblo Preps Power Five, suffered a 38-21 loss to Roosevelt.

Dolores Huerta also suffered a loss – but claimed somewhat of a moral victory – in a 22-14 loss on the road to Front Range Christian, a team that was a playoff team in the 8-man classification last season.
